Available inDescriptionAustralians love their outdoors and with that comes many pesky insects including mosquitos, midges, sandflies and other biting nasties. Herb Valley Insect Repellent is a tried and trusted natural alternative for the effective relief from insects which disrupt our enjoyment of the great outdoors. It is DEET (diethyltoluamide) free and contains no harsh synthetic chemicals. It is safe to use and generally causes no adverse allergic reactions. The soothing base of the product may also be used to relieve the irritation caused by bites and stings. Why use insect repellents with natural-based ingredients? The Majority of personal insect repellents used in Australia today contain DEET. DEET is a common ingredient in high strength insect repellents. It has an oily feel, causes irritation to eyes, lips and other sensitive areas; may cause skin reactions with some users; damages certain plastics and fabrics; is less effective in low concentrations, increased reaction risk in high concentrations and has a strong 'chemical' smell. DEET is potentially toxic with long term use and may be fatal if swallowed. The over-use of products containing DEET may cause dermatitis, especially on children's sensitive skin and severe exposure to the ingredient may cause neurological problems. The major adverse effects of DEET in adults range from mild skin irritation to urticaria (hives). More serious skin eruptions such as burning, erythema (reddening), and blistering followed by ulceration, scarring and increased DEET absorption may occur through sunburnt or damaged skin. Herb Valley's personal insect repellent does not contain harsh chemicals and is produced by the use of a combination of natural plant based products. Citronella Oil is reputed for its ability to repel insects. Natural Pyrethrin derived from Chrysanthemum cinerariaefolium is an effective insecticide whilst being safe and gentle on the skin and clothing. Organic Tea Tree Oil derived from the Melaleuca family has a pleasant aroma and is a traditional herbal insect repellent. Highest quality Lavender Oil from lavender angustifolia is included for its insect repellent and insecticide properties as well as being soothing and pleasantly fragrant. Herb Valley has also added Aloe Vera and Witch Hazel to soothe the skin and act as a soothing base for the other ingredients. Herb Valley repellents are environmentally friendly; safer for those with sensitive skins and may be used on children. They also reduce the chance of irritation and are less harmful to plastics and fabrics. Herb Valley personal insect repellents contain a variety of nonharmful ingredients as thickening agents, humectants, solvents, bodying agents, astringents, stabilisers, suspending agents, emulsifiers and antifungal compounds. How it worksThe active ingredients in Herb Valley personal insect repellent work by deterring the pesky insects, including mosquitos, from contacting your skin. This leaves you free to enjoy the benefits of the great outdoors. Mosquitos are a traditional Aussie pest. They are known to carry disease and their bites may cause severe skin irritation through an allergic reaction to the mosquito's saliva - this is what causes the red bump and itching. The Natural Pyrethrin in Herb Valley insect repellent is derived from Chrysanthemum cinerariaefolium. It works by combining with a synergist, piperonyl butoxide (PBO), to disrupt the insect's metabolism. Pyrethrin is a natural insecticide that is lethal to insects yet is relatively safe for use by humans and warm-blooded mammals. Natural insect repellents generally provide shorter protection periods than their DEET based alternatives. This can be overcome by frequent re-application.
